The perilous trend of seeking digital validation has claimed another young life in the Agailjhara Upazila of Barisal. Raj Mondal Joy, a 16-year-old student, tragically lost his life on Wednesday evening while attempting to film a simulated suicide sequence for the popular video-sharing platform, TikTok. The incident occurred at his residence in the village of West Sujonkathi, under the Gaila Union, leaving the local community in a state of profound shock and mourning.
Raj Mondal Joy was a Year 10 student at the Vhagai Haldar Public Academy and was known among his peers as a prolific content creator. According to family sources, Joy had amassed a significant following on social media, frequently uploading choreographed clips to maintain his digital reach.
On the evening of the accident, Joy ascended to the second floor of his family home to record a new video. Preliminary reports suggest he intended to depict a hanging scene using a scarf (orna) as a prop. During the recording, the makeshift noose reportedly tightened unexpectedly, resulting in accidental strangulation.
The tragedy was discovered by his younger sister, Nupur Mondal, a Year 6 student. She had gone upstairs to alert her brother that his private tutor had arrived for their evening lessons. Upon receiving no response, she entered the room to find her brother suspended from a wooden ceiling beam.
Following the gruesome discovery, family members and neighbours rushed the unconscious teenager to the Agailjhara Upazila Health Complex. However, the efforts were in vain. Dr. Nasrin Jahan Nisha, the attending physician, officially pronounced him dead upon arrival.
The Agailjhara Police were subsequently notified and recovered the body from the medical facility. Sub-Inspector (SI) Omar Faruque confirmed that an initial Unnatural Death (UD) case has been registered. Following a forensic examination, the youth’s remains were handed over to his grieving parents on Thursday afternoon, 5 March.

The victim’s mother, Smriti Mondal, was inconsolable as she received her son’s body. Between bouts of grief, she issued a desperate appeal to the authorities, urging the government to impose stricter regulations or a total ban on such social media platforms.
“I beg the government to stop these applications,” she lamented. “My son is gone because of a video. I do not want any other mother’s heart to be emptied like mine due to the obsession with digital fame.”
The incident highlights a growing concern regarding “challenge culture” and high-risk content creation among teenagers. Local educators and authorities have advised parents to exercise greater vigilance over their children’s online activities to prevent such avoidable catastrophes.
