A Copa Sudamericana match between Argentina’s Independiente and visiting Universidad de Chile in Buenos Aires descended into chaos on Wednesday, leaving ten people injured and 90 arrested, according to club officials and police.

Incident Details

  • The match, held at the Libertadores de América Stadium, was initially suspended and later abandoned due to violent clashes between rival fans.
  • A stun grenade was reportedly thrown during the disturbances.
  • The violence escalated at half-time, when visiting Chilean fans began hurling stones, sticks, bottles, and stadium seats at a section of home supporters.
  • One Chilean supporter jumped from the stands to escape attacking fans, while some visiting supporters were beaten and stripped of their clothes by home fans, an AFP reporter on the scene said.

A security ministry source told AFP: “We have 90 people detained outside the stadium because they tried to cause trouble and they have already been taken to the police station.”
