A violent confrontation erupted in the village of Balia, within the Saltha Upazila of Faridpur, on Thursday night, leaving at least ten people injured. The conflict, which reportedly began over a mundane dispute regarding irrigation, escalated into a full-scale riot under the cover of darkness, with supporters of rival factions using torchlights to navigate the battlefield.
The violence pitted supporters of Nuru Matubbor against those of Zahid Matubbor, two local figures who have been locked in a bitter struggle for territorial dominance for years. Interestingly, both men were affiliated with the Awami League for the past 17 years. However, following the fall of the Awami League government, both leaders shifted their allegiance to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). This political transition has not quelled their rivalry; instead, it has intensified their efforts to establish supreme control over the Gotty Union. Both leaders have previously served prison sentences due to their involvement in prior skirmishes.
The immediate catalyst for Thursday’s violence was a disagreement over irrigating onion fields. On the afternoon of 22 January, Shahid Sharif, a supporter of Zahid Matubbor, engaged in a heated argument with Zahid Sharif, an ally of Nuru Matubbor. What began as a verbal spat in the fields soon turned into a physical scuffle.
By evening, tensions had reached a boiling point at the local Balia Market. Between 8:30 pm and 9:00 pm, hundreds of supporters gathered. In a scene described by witnesses as chaotic, the groups lit torches and launched a coordinated assault on one another.

As the clash intensified, the violence spilled over from the market into residential areas. Several of the more seriously wounded individuals have been admitted to the Faridpur Medical College Hospital, while others received first aid at local clinics.
The situation was eventually brought under control following the intervention of the Bangladesh Army and local police. Md. "The environment is currently calm, and we have deployed additional personnel to prevent any further outbreaks of violence," the OC stated.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the volatile nature of local power dynamics in rural Bangladesh, where personal and political feuds often simmer just beneath the surface, waiting for a minor spark to ignite.
