“Thakurgaon district Jamaat Amir arrested at the airport with 5 million taka”

Published: 11 Feb 2026, 01:46 pm

Law enforcement authorities arrested Belal Uddin, the district chief of Jamaat-e-Islami in Thakurgaon, at Saidpur Airport on Tuesday while he was allegedly carrying a substantial sum of cash. Preliminary reports suggest the amount in his possession could be as high as 50 lakh Bangladeshi Taka.

The arrest was confirmed by Nilphamari Police Superintendent Sheikh Zahidul Islam PPM, who told journalists that the seized cash would be counted using official machines to ensure transparency.

“The district chief is currently in police custody at the airport,” Sheikh Zahidul Islam said during a phone conversation with Juganatar. “In his initial questioning, he admitted to carrying approximately 50 lakh Taka. The cash will be counted in the presence of media representatives shortly, following which appropriate legal action will be taken.”

Authorities have emphasised that all procedures will follow the law strictly, including proper documentation and accounting of the seized funds. The police also indicated that the investigation could extend to tracing the source of the cash and examining whether it was intended for electoral purposes, given the proximity of national elections.

The timing of the arrest is particularly sensitive, as Bangladesh is set to hold its 13th National Parliamentary Elections on 12 February. The detention of a senior opposition political leader with such a significant amount of unaccounted cash has already sparked public debate and widespread media attention. Observers note that incidents of this nature could influence public perception and electoral dynamics in the region.

Police sources have also indicated that further questioning may reveal additional details about financial networks within political groups. Given the scale of the cash involved, authorities are treating the matter with high priority.

Local residents have expressed mixed reactions to the arrest. While some welcome the enforcement of law against illegal cash circulation, others are concerned about potential political ramifications so close to the election. Analysts note that such high-profile arrests could send a strong signal regarding anti-corruption measures ahead of the national vote.

The police are expected to release a detailed report after the official counting of the money, which will be carried out under strict supervision to maintain transparency and credibility.

Further updates are awaited as the investigation progresses.
