Manchester United midfielder Casemiro is set to bring his Manchester United chapter to a close at the end of the current season. The English giants confirmed the news in an official statement yesterday, signalling the departure of the 33-year-old Brazilian. Although the club had the option to extend his contract for an additional year, United have opted not to exercise it.
Casemiro shared an emotional message on social media reflecting on his time at Old Trafford, accompanied by a video highlighting some of his most memorable moments. He wrote:
"I have made the decision—these will be my final four months at Old Trafford. Forever grateful. Forever a Red Devil."
He added, "Manchester United will remain in my heart forever. From the first day I stepped into this magnificent stadium, I felt the passion of Old Trafford, and the love from these extraordinary supporters has become my own."
The former Real Madrid star joined United in August 2022 for a reported £60 million, becoming a central figure in the midfield. In 146 appearances for the club, Casemiro scored 21 goals, providing both defensive solidity and attacking balance.
His contributions were pivotal in key trophy victories. In the 2023 EFL Cup final against Newcastle United, he scored a decisive header in the 2-0 triumph. He also played a significant role in Manchester United’s 2024 FA Cup campaign, helping guide the team to silverware.
Despite the departure announcement, Casemiro intends to focus on finishing his United career on a high. "This is not the time to say goodbye. We still have four months ahead, filled with opportunities to create memories. There is still much to fight for, and my only goal remains giving everything for the success of this team," he said.
United praised the Brazilian in an official statement: "Casemiro’s combative mentality and influence in big matches have made him a fans’ favourite. His presence on the field not only stabilises our defence but also provides crucial balance in attack."
Casemiro’s tenure at Old Trafford has not been without challenges. In the 2023-24 season, inconsistent performances drew criticism, and speculation about a move to Saudi Arabia circulated. Nevertheless, the midfielder chose to remain in Europe and rebuild his form.
Currently, Manchester United sit fifth in the Premier League, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal. The Red Devils will face the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium this Sunday.
