The International Cricket Council (ICC) has issued a stern warning to Pakistan following the government’s announcement to boycott its group-stage T20 World Cup match against India, without providing any specific reason. The declaration, made by Islamabad, triggered immediate concern among cricket authorities worldwide.
In a statement, the ICC emphasised that such a unilateral decision conflicts with the broader interests of international cricket. The governing body urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to seek a “mutually acceptable resolution” that safeguards the interests of all stakeholders.
The ICC confirmed that it has not received any formal communication from the PCB regarding the government’s directive. It stressed that refusing to participate in a scheduled match undermines the fundamental structure of international tournaments.
“The cornerstone of a global sporting event is that all eligible teams compete on an equal footing according to the predetermined schedule. Skipping selected matches calls into question the integrity, fairness, and credibility of the competition,” the ICC statement read.
The India-Pakistan clash is scheduled for 15 February and is widely regarded as the most commercially lucrative match of the tournament. While the ICC respects national policy decisions, it noted that such actions go against the interests of cricket fans around the world.
The council also cautioned Pakistan about the potential long-term repercussions of a boycott.
“The PCB must consider the broader implications for Pakistan cricket, given the country’s integral role and benefits as part of the global cricketing ecosystem,” the ICC added.
Uncertainty surrounding Pakistan’s participation has grown since Bangladesh was removed from the tournament due to security concerns. Bangladesh’s refusal to play in India led the ICC to officially exclude them on 24 January, a decision that drew sharp criticism from PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. He accused the ICC of applying a double standard in favour of India and reiterated that the final decision on Pakistan’s participation rests with the government.
The 2026 T20 World Cup is co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Pakistan is in Group A alongside India, the Netherlands, Namibia, and the United States. Pakistan will play all its other matches in Sri Lanka:
| Date | Opponent | Venue | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 February | Netherlands | Sri Lanka | Scheduled |
| 10 February | USA | Sri Lanka | Scheduled |
| 15 February | India | India | Under threat |
| 18 February | Namibia | Sri Lanka | Scheduled |
A boycott of the India match would automatically cost Pakistan two points and negatively impact their net run rate. Under ICC regulations, if a team fails to appear, its net run rate for the full 20 overs will be calculated, while the opposing team’s net run rate remains unaffected.
As the cricket world watches closely, the decision by Pakistan could have significant implications for the team’s standing in the tournament and its global reputation.
