Political analyst and presenter Zillur Rahman has observed that politics in Bangladesh is currently caught in a strange and tense struggle. After the long-standing rule of a one-party system ended, the people of the country had hoped for a period of relief and stability. However, the reality appears to be entirely different.

Rahman noted that the national election scheduled for early next year has already generated confusion, conflict, and a climate of political instability. Questions surrounding the role of the interim government have arisen, while political parties are increasingly engaged in clashes over their strategic positions. This, he warns, is rendering the path to a democratic future even more uncertain.

He shared these insights in a recent video posted on his YouTube channel.

1. Major Conflict Over Proportional Representation
Rahman explained that the most significant political tension has emerged over the proposal to introduce a proportional representation system.

  • While political parties discuss reforms to the core framework of democracy, they are largely focusing on their own interests rather than the national good.
  • Implementing such a system would require a constitutional amendment, a mandate that the interim government does not possess.

2. Ambiguity and Mixed Signals

  • At times, the interim government signals willingness to move forward with reforms, while at other moments it appears to retreat.
  • This inconsistency has increased political confusion, leaving ordinary citizens uncertain about what to expect.
  • The government maintains that elections will be held in the first half of February, yet conflicting statements continue to sow doubt.

3. Growing Public Concerns

  • Rahman pointed out that citizens are beginning to question whether this ambiguity is being deliberately created.
  • Alongside political conflicts and confusion, there has been a deterioration in law and order within the country.
