The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to make a final decision on whether the national team will participate in the 2026 T20 World Cup following an urgent consultation with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed on Sunday that the announcement will be made after discussions with the Prime Minister.
Addressing the ongoing controversy surrounding the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decisions, Naqvi reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the principles of cricket. “We do not subscribe to ICC’s double standards,” he said. “Pakistan has always stood for the integrity of the game, and supporting Bangladesh is part of that principle.”
Naqvi met with the players and team management in Lahore, reviewing preparations and gauging readiness for the upcoming tournament. He emphasised that the government’s decision would be fully implemented by the PCB. “Politicising cricket benefits no one. Every party must adhere to the rules and spirit of the game,” he added.
The recent ICC ruling to allow Scotland to replace Bangladesh in the tournament—after Bangladesh refused to travel to India citing security concerns—was highlighted by Naqvi as an example of inconsistent policy. “No country can impose conditions on another. Cricket must remain free of politics,” he stressed, calling ICC’s stance a reflection of “double standards.”
Pakistan’s players have expressed full support for the board’s forthcoming decision, asserting their commitment to abide by the PCB’s guidance. Naqvi praised the squad’s preparation and competitive mindset, underlining that success stems from collective effort and skill.
The PCB has already finalised Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad, led by captain Salman Ali Agha. The team will compete in all matches in Sri Lanka, as the tournament is jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, starting on 7 February. Pakistan’s opponents in the group stages will include Scotland, West Indies, Italy, England, and Nepal.
