The UEFA Champions League group stage is reaching a critical juncture as 36 clubs vie for a coveted spot in the top eight. The revamped format introduced last season has made securing a place among Europe’s elite increasingly challenging, even for traditionally dominant sides. Last term, for instance, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, and eventual champions PSG all failed to finish in the top eight during the league phase, forcing them into the knockout play-offs. Manchester City were subsequently eliminated by Real Madrid in those decisive matches.
As the seventh round of the group stage begins today, several heavyweights are once again at risk of missing the top eight.
Following six matches, the current top eight consists of Arsenal, Bayern Munich, PSG, Manchester City, Atalanta, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Atlético Madrid. Arsenal lead the table with a perfect record of six wins and 18 points, while Bayern Munich sit second with 15 points from five victories. PSG, Manchester City, and Atalanta have also secured their spots in at least the knockout play-off stage. However, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Atlético Madrid must rely on their final two fixtures to guarantee their progression.
| Team | Played | Wins | Draws | Losses | Points | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arsenal | 6 | 6 | 0 | 0 | 18 | Secured top spot |
| Bayern Munich | 6 | 5 | 0 | 1 | 15 | Strong position |
| PSG | 6 | 4 | 1 | 1 | 13 | Knockout secured |
| Manchester City | 6 | 4 | 1 | 1 | 13 | Knockout secured |
| Atalanta | 6 | 4 | 1 | 1 | 13 | Knockout secured |
| Inter Milan | 6 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 11 | Top eight uncertain |
| Real Madrid | 6 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 11 | Must win remaining matches |
| Atlético Madrid | 6 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 10 | Top eight at risk |
Inter Milan, last season’s runners-up, are sixth in the table but face a daunting run. They play Arsenal tonight, a team that has won all six matches, followed by Borussia Dortmund in their final fixture. Both matches are crucial for securing a top-eight finish.
Real Madrid’s path is equally tricky. Following the sacking of coach Xabi Alonso, the team is in a state of flux. They face Monaco tonight and travel to Benfica for their final match. Success in both games is essential; any unexpected slip-up could jeopardise their progression.
Liverpool, currently ninth with 12 points from six games, are behind primarily on goal difference. Their next two fixtures—against Marseille and Qarabağ—are relatively easier, offering the Reds a chance to secure direct entry into the round of 16. Chelsea, with 10 points, must defeat Pafos and Napoli to remain in contention.
Barcelona’s situation is arguably the most precarious. Sitting 15th with 10 points from six games (three wins, one draw, two losses), they face a steep climb to the top eight. Upcoming matches against Slavia Prague and Copenhagen will be critical; victories in both could revive their campaign.
The battle for the top eight this season is proving intensely competitive. With each match potentially reshaping the standings, the final two rounds of group fixtures promise high drama for Europe’s biggest clubs.
