Recent insights from Dr. Shibkumar Sarin, Director of the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) and a liver specialist, highlight why this seemingly innocent habit may be harmful.

Habit or Tradition?

Dr. Sarin notes that for many, tea drinking is a deeply ingrained tradition. “People often drink tea simply because it is a habit passed down from parents. Even when the body does not require it, the routine continues,” he explains.

However, he cautions that habitual tea consumption, particularly immediately after waking, can disrupt natural digestive processes.

The Gastro-Colic Reflex

When we wake, the body naturally initiates the gastro-colic reflex—a mechanism that stimulates bowel movements after a period of fasting overnight. “This reflex is entirely normal,” Dr. Sarin says. “It prepares the colon to process food or drink, which is why many people feel the urge to defecate soon after waking.”

Drinking tea at this point, particularly on an empty stomach, can interfere with this natural rhythm and strain the digestive system.

How Tea Affects the Stomach

Tea contains caffeine and tannins, both of which can irritate the stomach lining. Tannins, in particular, may cause a burning sensation, leading to heartburn, bloating, or indigestion. Over time, habitual empty-stomach tea consumption may contribute to chronic digestive discomfort and impair gut health.

Dr. Sarin advises adopting a mindful morning routine that prioritises natural digestive methods over caffeine dependency. “A healthy bowel habit can be maintained through a balanced diet, hydration, and fibre intake, rather than relying solely on tea to stimulate digestion,” he recommends.
