In a dramatic turn of events, Scotland has unexpectedly secured a place in this year’s T20 World Cup. The opportunity arose after Bangladesh declined to participate in the tournament in India and Sri Lanka, citing security concerns. Following considerable deliberation, the International Cricket Council (ICC) extended the invitation to Scotland to take Bangladesh’s place. Yesterday, Cricket Scotland officially announced their squad and expressed solidarity with the players of Bangladesh.
Cricket Scotland’s Chief Executive, Trudi Lindblade, emphasised the board’s sympathy for the Bangladesh team, saying, “We absolutely feel for Bangladesh. This is not the way any team wants to enter a World Cup. Qualification is a process, and no team desires an invitation under such circumstances. We acknowledge that our participation results from extraordinary circumstances, and we genuinely feel for the Bangladeshi players.”
Scotland has been drawn into Group C, replacing Bangladesh. Their campaign begins on 7 February, leaving the team with limited time for preparation. Nevertheless, Lindblade reassured that the squad is ready for the challenge. “Despite the last-minute nature of our inclusion, we are fully prepared to compete at the highest level. People may have opinions about how we entered, but our focus is solely on performing as a team ranked 14th in the world and consistently active throughout the year,” she added.
Scotland’s recent form in qualification had been mixed. They lost to Italy and Jersey in the European regional final last July, missing out on direct qualification. However, the sudden opportunity to participate in the World Cup presents a new chapter for the team.
The team’s Group C fixtures are as follows: they will face West Indies, Italy, and England in Kolkata, before playing Nepal in Mumbai. The top two teams from the group will progress to the Super Eight stage. Scotland has previously competed in six editions of the T20 World Cup, including the last four tournaments consecutively.

Lindblade also addressed potential criticism about Scotland’s entry through unconventional circumstances, stating, “I won’t use words like ‘backdoor entry.’ Opinions may vary, but we were invited to participate, and we are proud to represent a competitive, consistently performing side.”
Despite the unusual circumstances, Scotland now looks forward to showcasing their talent on the global stage while carrying a message of respect and empathy towards Bangladesh’s team.
