There is no decision to impose any penalty on the BCB for not taking part in the World Cup

After a brief but pivotal visit to Lahore, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam Bulbul has returned with two major outcomes that significantly strengthen Bangladesh’s position within world cricket. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has formally confirmed that Bangladesh will face no punishment for its absence from the recent World Cup, while also granting the country the right to host a future ICC global event between 2028 and 2031.

The decisions followed a high-level tripartite meeting held in Lahore on Sunday, involving representatives from the ICC, the BCB and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The talks were convened in response to a complex sequence of events triggered by Bangladesh’s decision not to participate in the World Cup due to security concerns, and Pakistan’s subsequent refusal to play a scheduled match against India.

In an official media release issued after the meeting, the ICC made it clear that, given the prevailing circumstances, no financial, sporting or administrative sanctions would be imposed on the BCB. This assurance removes lingering uncertainty over Bangladesh’s standing in international cricket governance and dispels speculation about potential penalties.

Importantly, the ICC also acknowledged Bangladesh’s continued right to seek redress through the Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC), should the BCB choose to do so. This right, the governing body stressed, remains fully protected under existing ICC regulations and has not been curtailed by the recent developments.

The ICC emphasised that its approach throughout the process was guided by principles of neutrality, fairness and proportionality. Rather than pursuing punitive measures, the council said it prioritised constructive engagement and institutional support, reflecting a broader commitment to cooperation among member boards during periods of disruption.

Perhaps the most strategically significant outcome for Bangladesh is the agreement that the country will host an ICC global event before the 2031 Cricket World Cup. While the specific tournament has yet to be confirmed, the hosting opportunity will fall within the standard ICC framework for event allocation, including established scheduling, operational requirements and governance protocols. According to the ICC, this decision demonstrates confidence in Bangladesh’s organisational capabilities and reinforces its pledge to distribute hosting rights more meaningfully across its membership.

ICC chief executive Sanjog Gupta described Bangladesh’s absence from the World Cup as “unfortunate”, but underlined that it does not alter the ICC’s long-term commitment to the country as a core cricketing nation. He noted that Bangladesh remains a priority cricket ecosystem, deserving sustained investment, competitive development and deeper global integration.

Gupta further stated that the ICC would continue to work closely with the BCB and other key stakeholders to ensure the sport’s growth, enhance opportunities for players, and deliver long-term value for supporters. Bangladesh, he added, should not be defined by a short-term disruption, but by its enduring contribution to international cricket.

Taken together, the outcomes mark a diplomatic and strategic success for the BCB, offering both immediate reassurance and long-term opportunity at a crucial juncture for Bangladesh cricket.
