As the countdown to the 12 February national parliamentary elections continues, Bangladesh finds itself caught between the festive atmosphere of the electorate and the transitional rhythm of the caretaker government. While citizens prepare to exercise their democratic rights, government officials are quietly making arrangements for an orderly handover of responsibilities.
Among these preparations, advisers of the interim government have begun returning official residences and diplomatic (red) passports to the relevant authorities. Sources confirm that two advisers have already vacated their government-provided residences, submitting formal letters to the Ministry of Housing and Public Works to facilitate the handover process.
Meanwhile, at least thirteen advisers, along with a senior official appointed on a contractual basis, have surrendered their diplomatic passports. Some advisers expressed a personal attachment to these documents, stating, “We will retain the red passport as long as we are in office, and will return it along with all official items upon leaving.” Others, however, have proactively begun transferring personal documents and materials from government offices to their homes to ensure a smooth transition. They emphasise that meticulous preparation is intended to help the incoming government assume responsibilities without delay.
Notably, advisers are taking steps to ensure the handover is prompt and efficient. Sources indicate that the process involves securing a no-objection certificate from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before applying for a new passport. Once the new passport is issued, the old diplomatic passport becomes automatically invalid.
At present, at least thirteen advisers have either received or applied for their new passports. The list includes senior figures from various ministries and departments:
| Adviser | Portfolio |
|---|---|
| Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed | Finance |
| Ali Imam Majumdar | Food & Land |
| Prof. Dr. Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar | Education |
| Dr. Asif Nazrul | Law |
| Adilur Rahman Khan | Housing & Public Works |
| Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan | Power & Energy |
| Prof. Dr. Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar | Primary & Mass Education |
| Faruq-e-Azam Birprotik | Liberation War & Relief |
| Farida Akhter | Fisheries & Livestock |
| Sheikh Bashiruddin | Commerce, Civil Aviation & Tourism, Textiles & Jute |
| Sharmin S. Murshid | Women & Children, Social Welfare |
| Nurjahan Begum | Health |
| Mostafa Sarwar Faruqui | Culture |
In addition, Bangladesh Police Inspector General Baharul Alam has also surrendered his diplomatic passport. Several advisers have reportedly already received their new passports to avoid procedural delays, ensuring that all transitions occur smoothly once the caretaker government concludes its tenure.
As the nation prepares to go to the polls, the orderly return of official items and red passports reflects a broader commitment among the interim administration to ensure a seamless transfer of authority to the incoming government.
