In a dramatic turn of events in the capital, the Demra Police have apprehended three individuals involved in a brazen attempt to kidnap a citizen by impersonating officers from the Detective Branch (DB). The incident, which occurred in broad daylight on Friday, 26 December, has once again raised alarms regarding the rise of criminal gangs using law enforcement disguises to extort and abduct unsuspecting civilians.
The victim, identified as Mr Sohag, was accosted at approximately 12:30 pm in front of the Fair Haven Blue Tower in Basherpul. According to his formal complaint, he had just left his residence to attend the Friday congregational prayers when a group of men intercepted him. Claiming to be DB officers, the assailants insisted that a criminal case had been filed against him at the Jatrabari Police Station and that he was required to accompany them for questioning.
The situation quickly escalated into an extortion attempt. One of the suspects, Mahmudul Hasan Khan, allegedly demanded a staggering 10 lakh Bangladeshi Taka in exchange for Mr Sohag’s “release.” When the victim attempted to contact his family, the gang used physical force to try and shove him into a waiting white private car, simultaneously robbing him of a wristwatch valued at approximately 30,000 Taka.
The police acted swiftly following a tip-off from locals who had intervened when Mr Sohag’s cries for help drew their attention. While two or three unidentified accomplices managed to flee the scene during the commotion, three suspects were cornered and handed over to the authorities.
| Suspect Name | Age | Permanent Address | Current Residence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Md. Mahmudul Hasan Khan | 25 | Narikel Bariya, Jhalakathi | Fatullah, Narayanganj |
| Md. Hossain Rana | 29 | Korai Bottola, Shariatpur | Dhalpur, Jatrabari |
| Md. Momin | 24 | Dakshin Bagapur, Keraniganj | Keraniganj, Dhaka |
During the arrest, the Demra Police seized several items used to bolster the suspects’ fraudulent identities, including:
One white private car (used for the attempted abduction)
Two walkie-talkie sets
One walkie-talkie charger
Inspector (Investigation) Md. Murad Hossain (PPM) of Demra Police Station confirmed that the suspects were taken into custody after failing to produce any legitimate service identification. “Our team reached the spot immediately after being informed by local residents,” he stated. “While the arrested individuals have disclosed their identities, they remain tight-lipped regarding their fugitive accomplices. We are continuing our raids to bring the rest of the gang to justice.”
The three arrested men are scheduled to be produced before the court on Saturday. The police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and always demand to see a valid identity card or warrant if approached by individuals claiming to be plainclothes officers.
