Police in Bagerhat have detained three individuals in connection with the removal of service cables outside the residence of Police Inspector General (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir. However, the district police have clarified that no actual burglary occurred at the IGP’s home.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Md. Hasan Chowdhury confirmed the details in a press statement issued on Wednesday, 18 March. The three arrested are:
| Name | Age | Residential Area |
|---|---|---|
| Md. Robiul Islam | 28 | Bagerhat |
| Abdur Kader | 24 | Bagerhat |
| Md. Chonchol Sheikh | 38 | Bagerhat |
The incident reportedly came to the attention of the local police on Tuesday after reports surfaced regarding the missing service cables. Subsequent police operations led to the arrest of the three individuals and the recovery of the stolen cables.
Addressing the media, SP Chowdhury emphasised that multiple online platforms and news outlets had inaccurately reported a burglary at the IGP’s residence. “These reports reached our attention,” he said, “but in reality, no theft occurred inside the IGP’s home. Some media circulated unverified information, which has caused unnecessary public concern.”
The actual sequence of events, according to the police, occurred on Monday, 16 March, around 11:00 p.m. During a heavy storm, electricity connections were disrupted. As a result, service cables adjacent to the exterior wall of the residence were torn and fell to the ground. Subsequently, unidentified individuals took the fallen cables.
The police have stressed that this was an opportunistic removal of cables rather than an intentional burglary and are urging media outlets to verify facts before reporting. “Our primary concern is maintaining accurate public information and preventing misconceptions,” SP Chowdhury added.
This incident has highlighted the importance of distinguishing between an accidental loss of property and a criminal act, especially when it involves high-profile residences. Authorities have assured that security measures are being reviewed to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
