In a swift judicial response to an act of egregious violence, three individuals have been sentenced to two months of rigorous imprisonment by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Special Metropolitan Magistrate. The conviction follows a shocking assault on intern doctors at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), an incident that severely disrupted patient care and caused widespread alarm among medical staff.
The convicted individuals, identified as Md. Shakib Hossain (25), Md. Shahriar Nazim Robin (21), and Imtiaz Ahammed (25), were immediately remanded to prison after their sentencing on Thursday, 22 January.
According to Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Talebur Rahman of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, the harrowing incident unfolded on Wednesday night, 21 January. A critically ill woman, Lucky Begum (34), was admitted to the DMCH by her relatives. Tragically, she succumbed to her illness at approximately 11:00 PM.
Following the pronouncement of her death, the patient’s son, Rakib, immediately accused the hospital staff of medical negligence. This accusation rapidly escalated when Shakib, identified as a friend of Rakib, telephoned and summoned an additional mob of 20-30 young men to the hospital.

Shakib and his accomplices stormed into the Medicine Department, initiating a barrage of abusive behaviour towards the doctors and nurses on duty. The situation quickly deteriorated as they physically assaulted two intern doctors, causing immediate panic among staff and patients.
The violent outburst brought medical services in the department to a standstill, with critical care temporarily disrupted. Hospital security personnel, aided by the authorities, eventually managed to restore order. The three identified assailants were apprehended and handed over to the police camp within the hospital premises, while the remaining unknown attackers fled the scene.
The prompt judicial process underscores the authorities’ zero-tolerance stance on violence against healthcare professionals. The three arrested individuals were presented before the Special Metropolitan Magistrate, who, upon reviewing the evidence, swiftly sentenced them to two months of rigorous imprisonment. This rapid verdict is intended to send a clear message that such assaults on frontline medical workers, who operate under immense pressure, will not be tolerated.
