Southern Europe is grappling with deadly wildfires and soaring temperatures as a heatwave sweeps across the continent. On Tuesday, three men lost their lives, while thousands of residents were forced to evacuate their homes.

Authorities have issued heat alerts in Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, and the Balkans, with temperatures expected to rise above 40°C. The extreme heat is widely regarded as a stark signal of climate change, which is producing longer, more intense, and increasingly frequent bouts of extreme temperatures.

“Thanks to climate change, we now live in a significantly warmer world,” said Akshay Deoras, a research scientist in the meteorology department at the University of Reading, UK. “Many still underestimate the danger.”

Fatalities and Incidents

Country Incident Details
Spain (Tres Cantos, near Madrid) Equestrian centre employee Died trying to save horses
Spain (Castile and Leon) Firefighter Killed while fighting fires
Montenegro (north of Podgorica) Soldier Died when water tanker overturned; another seriously injured
Italy Child Died of heatstroke on Monday

The equestrian centre employee was the first fatality among dozens of wildfires that have affected Spain since the heatwave began last week. Hundreds of residents in Tres Cantos fled a fast-moving blaze, which was contained on Tuesday morning.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez took to X, stating:

“Rescue services are working tirelessly to extinguish the fires. We are at extreme risk of forest fires. Please be very cautious.”

Evacuations and Regional Impacts

  • In Andalusia, southern Spain, approximately 2,000 people were evacuated from hotels and homes near the beaches of Tarifa. The wildfire occurred near the site of a previous blaze that prompted evacuations earlier this month.
  • Antonio Sanz, Andalusia’s interior minister, reported:

“We managed to save the residential area at the very last second.”

  • In Castile and Leon, multiple fires threatened areas including Las Medulas, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its ancient Roman gold mines. Regional leader Alfonso Fernandez Manueco promised to restore the site “to its full glory as soon as possible” once the fire subsides.

Portugal is also facing severe fires, particularly near Trancoso, where over 700 firefighters have been deployed. In the hamlet of Mendo Gordo, church bells sounded an alarm as smoke rose over the horizon, broadcast on Portuguese television.

Climate and Environmental Impact

According to the EU climate monitor Copernicus, smoke and greenhouse gas emissions from forest fires since the beginning of the Northern Hemisphere summer are among the highest ever recorded.

  • Drought and Heat: More than half of Europe and the Mediterranean basin (52%) experienced drought in July for the fourth consecutive month, surpassing the 2012-2024 average by 21%, according to the European Drought Observatory.

France: Record Temperatures

  • Four weather stations in southern France broke temperature records on Monday.
  • Three-quarters of the country were under heat alerts on Tuesday, with the Rhone Valley forecasted to exceed 40°C. Outdoor public events were banned in the Rhone department.
  • France is experiencing its second heatwave in weeks, which could extend into next week, creating a 12–14-day stretch of extreme heat.

Local resident Alain Bichot, 34, told AFP:

“It’s already too hot. I would rather just go to the office. At least there is air conditioning there.”

Italy: Red Alerts and Casualties

Eleven cities, including Rome, Milan, and Florence, were placed on red alert on Tuesday due to extreme temperatures.

Balkans: Montenegro and Neighbouring Countries

  • In Montenegro, a wildfire near Podgorica led to the death of a soldier when a water truck flipped. Authorities warned residents to stay indoors due to smoke.
  • Hundreds of soldiers and firefighters are battling wildfires in Albania, while Greece has requested EU assistance to combat over 100 fires, aided by strong winds and dry conditions. Athens has requested four water bombers from the EU Civil Protection Mechanism after evacuating 20 villages in the Achaia region.

Summary Table: Europe Wildfire Crisis

Region Fires Evacuations Fatalities Notes
Spain Dozens Hundreds in Tres Cantos; 2,000 near Tarifa 2 Fires concentrated in Castile & Leon and Andalusia
Portugal 3 major Thousands threatened 0 reported Fire near Trancoso with 700+ firefighters deployed
France Multiple Not specified 0 Record temperatures; outdoor events banned in Rhone
Italy Numerous Not specified 1 child Eleven cities on red alert
Montenegro Several Residents advised to stay indoors 1 soldier Water tanker overturned
Greece 100+ 20 villages evacuated 0 EU assistance requested
Albania Multiple Not specified 0 Fires ongoing

The European wildfires and relentless heatwaves are a stark reminder of the mounting impact of climate change, affecting millions across the continent with both immediate danger and long-term environmental consequences.
