An explosion at a chemical plant in southern Russia has resulted in the deaths of three workers, regional authorities confirmed on Saturday. The cause of the blast remains under investigation.
The incident occurred at the Avangard factory in Sterlitamak, a city located in Russia’s Bashkortostan region. According to Russian media reports, the facility is known for producing weapons and ammunition used in Russia’s ongoing military campaign in Ukraine.
Bashkortostan’s governor, Radiy Khabirov, announced the tragedy on his official Telegram channel, stating that:“A pretty violent explosion destroyed one of the buildings at the chemical factory site, killing three women.”
He further reported that five additional workers were injured, with two in serious condition and currently receiving treatment in hospital.
Khabirov added that the factory was engaged in “an important state-mandated mission” and regularly handled explosive materials. He confirmed that a team of experts was assessing the exact cause of the explosion.

The explosion follows a series of recent security incidents in the Bashkortostan region. In September, Ukrainian drones carried out strikes on a major oil refinery in the same area, operated by Gazprom, Russia’s state-controlled energy giant.
The September 18 drone attack, confirmed by Governor Khabirov at the time, targeted the Bashkortostan oil refinery, which was reportedly struck by two unmanned aerial vehicles.
These drone strikes were part of Kyiv’s broader counter-offensive, aimed at disrupting Russia’s energy revenues that are believed to be sustaining the country’s military operations.
The recent Avangard factory explosion has reignited concerns over industrial safety and the vulnerability of critical military-related infrastructure in Russia’s interior regions. Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine whether the incident was due to technical failure, human error, or possible sabotage.
