Throat-Slit Body Found in Hizla Upazila of Barishal

The throat-slit body of a young man has been recovered from the Meghna River in Hizla upazila of Barishal, prompting a police investigation into what authorities have described as a “mysterious” death.

The deceased was identified as Md Amir Hossain, a resident of Charghasia village under Ward No. 2 of Uttar Charbanshi Union in Raipur upazila of Lakshmipur district. He was the eldest son of farmer Shopan Howlader of the Howlader household. Amir was known locally as a hardworking young man who regularly went fishing to supplement his family’s income.

According to police and local sources, Amir left home early on Tuesday morning, 20 January, as he usually did, to fish in the Meghna River. Hours later, at around 11:00 am, members of the River Police recovered his body from the riverbank at Boyarchar in Borjali Union of Hizla upazila. Visible marks on the body indicated that his throat had been cut, raising strong suspicions of homicide.

Rakib Hossain, a businessman from the Chandarkhal area of Charbanshi, said the family remained unaware of Amir’s fate until the afternoon. At approximately 5:00 pm, Amir’s relatives received a phone call from Barishal Medical College Hospital informing them that the River Police had recovered his body from the Meghna riverbank in Hizla. The news plunged the family and the wider community into shock and grief.

Following recovery, the body was sent for post-mortem examination to the morgue of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal. Police officials confirmed that a case has been filed in connection with the incident, although no arrests had been made as of the latest update.

Officer-in-Charge of Hizla Police Station, Md Adil Hossain, said the death was “highly suspicious” and that investigators were examining all possible angles, including personal enmity, robbery, and disputes linked to fishing activities on the Meghna. “The exact cause of death and the circumstances leading to the incident will be determined after completion of the investigation and receipt of the post-mortem report,” he added.

Local residents have demanded a swift and impartial investigation, noting that the Meghna is a vital livelihood source for many families and that violence in the area has caused widespread anxiety.
