Thunderstorm Devastation in Thakurgaon Kills Student

A sudden and violent thunderstorm swept through Ranishankail Upazila in Thakurgaon district on Thursday night, resulting in the tragic death of 13-year-old schoolboy Rezoan Hossain. The incident occurred in Kumarghanj village of Nekmord Union, where part of a house collapsed under the force of the storm.

Rezoan, the only child of Taherul Islam, was a seventh-grade student at Nekmord Ideal School and College. Known for his cheerful and friendly nature, his untimely death has cast a deep shadow of grief over the local community.

According to family members and local residents, the thunderstorm began abruptly on Thursday evening, accompanied by strong winds that tore off the tin roof of Rezoan’s home. The upper portion of the brick wall then collapsed onto the sleeping boy. Despite being rescued and rushed to a nearby medical facility, he succumbed to his injuries before help could save him.

Ranishankail Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Amanullah Al Bari, confirmed the tragic incident, stating, “We have received reports of a boy killed when a wall collapsed during the storm. It is an extremely distressing event.”

The severe weather has also caused extensive damage across the agricultural sector in the Upazila over the past two days. Crops including maize, potatoes, and other seasonal produce have suffered substantial losses, while trees have been uprooted and numerous homes damaged.

Mazedul Islam, Deputy Director of the Thakurgaon Agricultural Extension Department, confirmed the scale of the losses. “The thunderstorm has caused significant damage to crops. Our field officers are currently assessing the exact extent of the destruction,” he said.

A preliminary assessment of the storm’s impact in the affected areas is outlined below:

Sector Affected Nature of Damage Estimated Impact
Crops Maize, potatoes, seasonal vegetables 50–70% loss in affected fields
Trees Fruit-bearing and roadside trees Many uprooted or broken
Homes Roofs, walls 20–30 houses partially damaged
Utilities Electricity lines, communication infrastructure Disruptions in multiple areas

Local residents have expressed concern that if similar storms occur in the coming days, the damage to both property and agriculture could worsen. Authorities have mobilised emergency response teams to provide relief and support affected families, while agricultural officials continue to evaluate crop losses to inform recovery efforts.

The sudden thunderstorm in Ranishankail serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of the region to extreme weather events. Meteorologists have urged residents to take precautions during periods of unstable weather, as rapid changes in wind and rainfall can pose serious risks to both life and property.
