“Tim Paine: Perth proved a tough start for England in Ashes”

England may have already faced their most testing conditions of this Ashes series in Perth, according to former Australia captain Tim Paine. The opening Test at the WACA saw Ben Stokes’ side suffer an eight-wicket defeat, with several batsmen unable to handle the bounce and pace the pitch offered.

“Perth is the hardest place to start an Ashes series,” Paine told BBC Radio 5 Live. “People often criticise England too harshly, but it’s a challenging ground even for Australians, unless you’re from Western Australia. Getting caught out by the bounce is not just an English issue; it happens to all of us.”

He added that the silver lining for England is that they have now experienced the pitch at its most difficult, which should make the rest of the series slightly easier. “When England find their rhythm, they can have some very good days, and those days are usually enough to win a Test. Australia will have to stay at the top of their game,” Paine said.

Looking ahead, he believes the series will be defined by consistency. “Over the 25 days of Ashes cricket, Australia’s ability to maintain focus, play the percentages wisely, and perform steadily will likely make the difference. England may have bursts of brilliance, but Australia’s sustained approach could decide the outcome of the series,” he concluded.
