Police in Tangail have arrested five individuals, including three local leaders of the BNP, in connection with an extortion attempt involving a threatening letter delivered to a fish trader under the name of the so-called “Killer Gang”. The suspects were detained from the Santosh area of the town during operations carried out on Friday night and early Saturday morning (1–2 August).

The arrests were confirmed on Saturday afternoon by Tanvir Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tangail Sadar Police Station, who stated:
“They were arrested with assistance from the Detective Branch (DB) of Police.”

The letter reportedly read:
“You’ve been in the fish trade for a long time. Five lakh taka is nothing for you. Deliver the money by 7 PM on Sunday, 3 August. If you tell anyone, your body won’t be found.”
Public Reaction
Once the content of the letter spread on social media, it triggered significant alarm among local business owners in Tangail. The use of a violent alias such as “Killer Gang” and the nature of the threats intensified concerns over safety and extortion in the area.
Political Response
Ijazul Haque Sabuj, General Secretary of the City BNP, responded to the arrests, claiming:
“BNP leaders and activists are being falsely implicated as part of a political conspiracy.”
