In Kurigram’s Roumari, a man named Hafizur Rahman has been officially recorded as becoming a father just three years after his own birth, making him only three years older than his son. Although this sounds astonishing, the incident occurred due to age manipulation carried out in exchange for money to secure a village police job, sparking widespread criticism across the upazila.
According to local sources, Hafizur Rahman is a resident of Puraton Jadurchar village in Ward No. 3 of Jadurchar Union under the river-isolated Roumari upazila. He lives with his wife, two sons and one daughter. He even married off his children a few years ago. However, in order to obtain the position of village police, he altered his age with the help of Union Chairman Sorobesh Ali, showing himself to be 29 years old in his birth registration.
Investigations reveal that Hafizur is not the only one—last August, 19 village police members were recruited across five unions of the upazila. A syndicate allegedly collected around four lakh taka from each candidate, amounting to nearly one crore taka.
Hafizur joined the job on 28 August after altering his age. Earlier, on 6 May, the Roumari upazila administration issued recruitment notices for two posts in Jadurchar Union, seven in Datbhanga, five in Roumari Union, four in Bandaber, and one in Shoulmari Union.
According to records, Hafizur appears as voter number 231 in the national identity card, listed as the son of Abdus Samad and Dordi Begum, with his birth date recorded as 7 May 1985. However, on 27 May this year, he obtained a new birth registration stating his birth date as 7 May 1996. His birth certificate number is 199649917935136304. Meanwhile, his son Nayon Mia’s NID lists his birth date as 1 March 1999—making the father only three years older than his son and only one and a half years older than his elder daughter.
Ward member Robiul Haque said that Hafizur and his family are all voters of this ward, yet he secured the job by manipulating his age using a new birth registration. He added that such fraud would not occur without substantial financial transactions.
A newly appointed village police member, requesting anonymity, claimed that Chairman Sorobesh Ali took three lakh taka from him. He also heard that each candidate paid between three to four lakh taka for their appointment.
Accused village police member Hafizur Rahman stated that he married at the age of 15, and the age in his voter ID is incorrect. He insisted that the age in his birth registration is accurate and that he obtained the job based on that information.
However, Union Chairman Sorobesh Ali claimed that Hafizur was appointed after verifying his school and birth registration documents, and denied any financial transactions.
Roumari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Uzzal Kumar Haldar said that if any complaint is lodged regarding age fraud, an investigation will be conducted.
