Today marks the observance of Lailat al-Miraj, also known as Shab-e-Miraj, one of the most significant nights in Islam. Devout Muslims across the country commemorate this sacred night with prayers, reflection, and acts of worship, seeking the mercy and forgiveness of Almighty Allah.
The night of Miraj represents a historic and pivotal moment in the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is during this extraordinary event that the obligation of the five daily prayers (Salah) was prescribed for the Muslim community. Acting upon Allah’s command, the beloved Prophet conveyed to humanity the duty of performing these prayers five times a day.
According to Islamic tradition, in the tenth year of Prophethood, corresponding to 621 CE, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) experienced a miraculous journey. On this night, he was transported from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca (Kaaba Sharif) to Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, an event referenced in the Qur’an as Isra. Here, he led the congregation of earlier prophets in prayer, highlighting his spiritual significance and leadership.
Following this, the Prophet ascended to the heavens on a celestial steed known as Buraq, accompanied by the Archangel Gabriel (Jibril, peace be upon him). This heavenly journey, called Miraj, allowed him to witness remarkable sights including Sidrat al-Muntaha, the rivers of Paradise, and Bayt al-Ma‘mur, the heavenly site of angelic worship. Ultimately, he reached the presence of Allah, receiving divine instruction and spiritual enlightenment.
In observance of this sacred night, Muslims engage in Qur’an recitation, Zikr (remembrance of Allah), voluntary prayers (Nafl Salah), and heartfelt supplications (Du‘a and Munajat) both in mosques and private homes. This spiritual vigil serves as a profound reminder of faith, devotion, and the significance of prayer in daily life.
