Rauzan, Chattogram – A three-year-old child, Misbah, was successfully rescued after falling into a deep well in Rauzan Upazila, Chattogram, following an intensive four-and-a-half-hour operation.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, 28 January, shortly after 3:00 pm, in Borua Para, Joynagar, Ward 9 of Kadolpur Union. Misbah is the son of local resident Saiful Azam.
According to eyewitnesses and family members, the well had been dug by the government four to five years ago as part of a project to construct a deep tube well. However, the well itself was never installed. The uncovered shaft, located approximately 30 to 40 feet from the child’s home, became the site of the tragic accident.
Five units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence were immediately deployed to the scene. Station Officer Adam Ali confirmed that three units, equipped with rescue gear, began operations after receiving the alert. Using cameras, rescuers were able to locate the child 12 feet below ground. The surrounding soil was then carefully excavated with pickaxes, allowing the team to retrieve Misbah safely by around 8:00 pm.
Speaking at the site, the acting chairman of Kadolpur Union said that the well had been part of a government scheme initiated three to four years ago, but the tube well was never installed. He expressed his inability to explain why the project remained incomplete.
Rauzan Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Md. Sajedul Islam Kalbela, stated that the child fell into the pit at approximately 3:30 pm and, after persistent efforts, was rescued five hours later. The police coordinated closely with the Fire Service throughout the rescue operation. Following the rescue, Misbah was admitted to the Upazila Health Complex for medical observation.
Local residents praised the swift response of emergency services, highlighting the meticulous and patient efforts that ensured the child’s safety despite the challenging circumstances. Authorities have urged parents and communities to remain vigilant around abandoned construction sites and unfinished government projects to prevent similar accidents in the future.
