The Tollywood film Dhumketu, starring the popular on-screen pair Dev and Subhashree, has taken audiences by storm in West Bengal. Since its release on 14 August, cinemas have been packed from the morning, with every show running houseful. Riding this wave of enthusiasm, the filmmakers are now eager to release the film in Bangladesh, prompting producer Rana Sarkar to make a formal appeal to Mostofa Sarwar Faruqui, Advisor to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
On Friday, 14 August, Rana Sarkar posted on social media: “We are keen to release Dhumketu in Bangladesh. We request the Government of Bangladesh to honour the love of countless Bangladeshi cine-lovers for Bengali cinema and grant us permission. We sincerely hope that the government and esteemed Advisor Mostofa Sarwar Faruqui approve our request.”
The producer also urged fans in Bangladesh to support the appeal: “We request the fans of Dev and Subhashree in Bangladesh to appeal to the government to allow the release of Dhumketu in your country.”
Dev and Subhashree have long enjoyed immense popularity among audiences on both sides of the border. Many of their earlier films were widely loved by Bangladeshi viewers. Despite not working together for over ten years, their fan base has remained strong. The release of Dhumketu after such a long gap has generated tremendous excitement among audiences in both West Bengal and Bangladesh.
The film has made a remarkable impact at the box office, earning ₹2.10 crore on its first day alone. Dhumketu has been directed by Kaushik Ganguly, further adding to the anticipation and fan enthusiasm surrounding the movie.
With the film’s growing popularity and fan demand, a Bangladesh release could further strengthen the cross-border appeal of Bengali cinema and satisfy long-standing fans of the Dev-Subhashree pairing.
