Crude oil, often referred to as the “black gold,” remains one of the most critical drivers of the global economy and geopolitics. Its production, trade, and export significantly influence international relations, economic stability, and energy security. In recent years, shifts in global oil dynamics, including conflicts, sanctions, and technological advances, have reshaped the landscape of oil exports, intensifying competition among major producing nations.
According to data from the World Population Review and Investopedia, the top five oil-exporting countries in terms of export volumes and revenues in 2024 are Saudi Arabia, Russia, the United States, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates. These countries collectively dominate global oil markets and wield substantial influence over international energy prices.
| Rank | Country | Daily Oil Exports (million barrels) | 2023 Export Volume (million barrels/day) | 2023 Export Revenue (USD billion) | Key Export Destinations |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Saudi Arabia | 6.0 | 6.7 | 150 | Asia, Europe |
| 2 | Russia | 4.5 | 4.8 | 122 | China, India |
| 3 | United States | 4.1 | 3.9 | 125 | Europe, Asia |
| 4 | Canada | 3.6 | 3.4 | 107 | United States |
| 5 | United Arab Emirates | 2.7 | 2.7 | 99 | Asia, Europe |
Saudi Arabia continues to lead global oil exports, holding nearly 17% of proven world oil reserves. In 2024, the kingdom exported around 6 million barrels per day, slightly lower than the 6.7 million barrels exported in 2023. The country’s daily production stood at 11.13 million barrels in 2023, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
Russia ranks second, despite facing international sanctions due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. With vast oil reserves, Russia exported approximately 4.5 million barrels per day in 2024, primarily to Asian markets such as China and India. Revenue from oil exports reached around $122 billion in 2023, making it one of the world’s highest-earning oil exporters.
The United States follows in third place, exporting 4.1 million barrels per day in 2024. Analysts note that the U.S. has gained ground by filling gaps left by restricted Russian supplies in European markets. In 2023, U.S. oil exports generated approximately $125 billion in revenue.
Canada, rich in oil sands, exported roughly 3.6 million barrels per day in 2024, with nearly 90% destined for the U.S. market. The country’s oil export revenue in 2023 exceeded $107 billion.
The United Arab Emirates rounds out the top five, exporting around 2.7 million barrels per day. Despite diversification efforts reducing reliance on oil, the energy sector remains a key component of its GDP. In 2023, UAE oil exports earned the nation nearly $99 billion, accounting for over 7.7% of global oil trade.
Other notable oil-exporting countries include Iraq, Brazil, Norway, and Nigeria, which continue to play strategic roles in regional and global energy markets.
These figures underscore the enduring geopolitical and economic importance of oil, as well as the fierce competition among nations to secure markets, revenue, and influence in a rapidly evolving global energy landscape.
