In a tragic accident in Meherpur, two young children lost their lives after accidentally falling into a pond in the village of Mailmari, located in Gangni Upazila. The incident occurred on Tuesday, 16 March, around 1:00 PM at a pond owned by local farmer Abbas Ali.
The victims have been identified as Adib Hossain, aged three and a half, son of Abbas Ali, and Yousuf Ali, aged three, son of Akash Ali. Both children were playing near the edge of the pond when, according to local witnesses, they inadvertently slipped into the water.
Neighbours reported that the children had been playing unattended near the water’s edge for a short while. Upon realising that the children were missing, family members began a frantic search. Their bodies were eventually discovered floating in the pond and were promptly recovered by locals. The two boys were then rushed to the Gangni Upazila Health Complex, where Dr Faruk Hossain, the attending physician, pronounced them dead.
The scene has left the community in shock, with residents expressing deep sorrow over the loss of the young lives. Safety around local water bodies has once again come under scrutiny, particularly in rural areas where children often play near ponds and canals without supervision.
Gangni Police Station Officer-in-Charge Uttam Kumar confirmed that the bodies have been recovered and taken to the police station. He added that unless the families raise any objections, permission for burial would be granted promptly. Authorities have urged parents to remain vigilant and to prevent children from playing unsupervised near potentially hazardous water bodies.
