A fatal road accident in Sylhet’s South Surma area claimed the life of a local resident on Sunday morning as he and several neighbours were travelling to collect the body of a deceased friend. The victim, Nazrul Islam, 52, was killed when the private car in which he was travelling collided head-on with an oncoming truck in Sonargaon, South Surma. Four other passengers, including the driver, sustained injuries and were rushed to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment, with several reported in critical condition.
Nazrul Islam, known locally as Niyaz, hailed from Abutalipur village in Joychandi Union of Kulaura Upazila, Moulvibazar, and was the son of the late Yakub Ali. He was married but had no children. His younger brother, local journalist Azizul Islam, confirmed the details of the accident and the identities of the injured.
According to Azizul Islam, the incident occurred while Nazrul and four neighbours were transporting the body of Abdul Ahad, who passed away at his Sylhet city residence on Saturday night. Ahad had formerly served as the Imam of the Osmani International Airport Mosque in Sylhet. Early on Sunday morning, after performing Fajr prayers, Nazrul and his companions hired a private car to convey Ahad’s body from the city back to their locality.
The tragic collision occurred at approximately 6:00 a.m. in Sonargaon when the private car met an oncoming truck head-on. Nazrul was pronounced dead at the scene, while bystanders and passersby assisted in transferring the injured to hospital. Police from South Surma Thana later arrived, securing the scene and transporting Nazrul’s body to Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Azizul Islam noted that the family is attempting to retrieve Nazrul’s body without post-mortem examination. The local community has expressed deep shock at the incident, highlighting ongoing safety concerns on busy routes in the Sylhet region.
