Tragedy Strikes: Coksbazar Gas Station Fire Claims Third Life

A third fatality has been confirmed in the devastating fire at the N Alam Filling Station in the Kalatoli area of Cox’s Bazar. Motaher, who had been receiving treatment for severe burns at the Burn Unit of Chittagong Medical College Hospital, succumbed to his injuries on the morning of Thursday, 5 March.

Motaher’s nephew, Md. Hridoy Babu, confirmed the death, revealing that despite intensive care over several days, medical staff were unable to save him. Family sources have indicated that Motaher’s funeral is likely to be held after Asr prayers on Thursday, though the timing may be adjusted following discussions with relatives.

Previously, two other victims—Abu Taher and Abdur Rahim—had died while receiving treatment at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka.

The catastrophic incident occurred on 25 February at the LPG gas station, where at least sixteen workers and staff suffered burn injuries. Ten of the injured were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital and other medical facilities due to the severity of their condition. Seven individuals remain under treatment.

The local community has been plunged into mourning, with residents expressing anger and concern over the lack of safety measures at the gas station. Many allege that the station was operating without proper approvals, leading to the tragic fire.

Official records from the Department of Explosives indicate that the filling station lacked all mandatory certifications, including:

Permit/Approval Status at Time of Incident
District Administration No Objection Certificate Not obtained
Environmental Clearance from Department of Environment Not obtained
Fire Service Approval Not obtained
Explosives License Not obtained

The station owner, Nurul Alam, also known as N Alam, has been named as the principal accused in the case filed by the Department of Explosives.

Relatives of the deceased have voiced their anguish, stating that the tragedy was the direct result of negligence and regulatory violations. They are calling for a thorough investigation, exemplary punishment for those responsible, and appropriate compensation for the families affected.

The fire has left a lasting scar on the Kalatoli area, highlighting urgent concerns regarding the enforcement of safety regulations at LPG stations across the region.
