A somber atmosphere has descended upon the Akhaura railway sector following a fatal accident involving the Upakul Express. On the morning of Tuesday, 3 March, a 50-year-old man identified as Rahim Mia lost his life after being struck by an intercity train near the Mandbagh railway station.
The victim, a resident of the Shashidal area within the Brahmanpara Upazila of Cumilla, was the son of Abul Hashem Mia. According to official reports, the incident occurred at the southern outer perimeter of the Mandbagh railway station.
Mr. Mia was reportedly walking along the tracks when the Dhaka-bound Upakul Express, which had departed from Noakhali, approached. Due to the high speed of the intercity service and the proximity of the victim to the line, he was unable to move to safety in time. The impact was instantaneous and catastrophic; the victim was severed by the force of the locomotive, resulting in immediate death at the scene.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Akhaura Railway Police Station, SM Sofiqul Islam, confirmed the details of the tragedy. Upon receiving notification of the accident, a railway police team was dispatched to the location. The recovery operation was completed by approximately 12:45 PM, at which point the remains were moved from the tracks.
“The victim was walking on the railway line when he was struck by the Dhaka-bound intercity train. It was a devastating accident that resulted in immediate fatality,” stated OC SM Sofiqul Islam.
In a compassionate turn, the railway authorities decided to forego a formal post-mortem examination. As the grieving family of the deceased raised no allegations of foul play or external negligence, the body was handed over to the relatives for burial rites and final proceedings.
