Bangladesh face a do-or-die clash against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup today. To qualify for the Super Four stage, they must not only win but win by a significant margin. On the eve of such a crucial contest, Afghanistan’s head coach Jonathan Trot startled many with his surprising remarks.
During a press conference, Trot stated: “If you look at history, Bangladesh have won this competition several times.”
Immediately, the Afghan team’s media manager corrected him.
Startled by the correction, Trot asked a journalist: “Are you sure?”
He then insisted that Bangladesh had at least once won the Asia Cup in the One-Day International (ODI) format. However, after checking on Google, he realised that Bangladesh had in fact never won the Asia Cup. With a sigh, he admitted: “I thought they had been champions.”
Despite their competitive cricketing history, Bangladesh have reached the final of the Asia Cup three times, yet the coveted title has always eluded them.
| Year | Format | Opponent in Final | Result |
| 2012 | ODI | Pakistan | Lost |
| 2016 | T20I | India | Lost |
| 2018 | ODI | India | Lost |
At present, under the leadership of Liton Das, the team face the threat of elimination from the group stage itself.
Despite his earlier mix-up, Trot made it clear that he holds Bangladesh in high regard:
Thus, while Trot may have misread Bangladesh’s trophy cabinet, his respect for their competitive edge and potential remains unmistakably firm.
