Truck Tyre Explosion Claims Driver’s Life in Kushtia

A tragic accident in Khoksa upazila of Kushtia district has claimed the life of a truck driver after a tyre burst during repair work at a roadside workshop along the Kushtia–Rajbari regional highway.

The incident occurred on Monday (13 April) at around midday near the Khoksa bus stand area, leaving local transport workers and bystanders shocked by the sudden and violent explosion.

The deceased was identified as Porobesh (40), son of Anwar Sheikh from Churamankathi area in Jessore. He was reportedly engaged in transporting sand-laden trucks when the fatal incident took place.

How the Incident Unfolded

According to police and eyewitness accounts, three sand-laden trucks were travelling from Kushtia towards Madaripur. During the journey, one of the vehicles experienced a mechanical issue after excessive air pressure in its tyre caused the wheel rim to crack.

In order to repair the fault, the driver, Porobesh, took the vehicle to a local mechanic’s workshop near the Khoksa bus stand. While repair work was underway, the damaged wheel suddenly exploded due to air pressure failure and structural damage to the rim.

The force of the explosion was severe, causing critical facial injuries to the driver. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the driver collapsing immediately after the blast.

He was rushed in critical condition to Khoksa Upazila Health Complex, where attending doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Victim Profile

Age 40 years
Father’s Name Anwar Sheikh
Home District Jessore
Area Churamankathi
Occupation Truck driver (sand transport)

Police Statement and Investigation

Officer-in-Charge of Khoksa Police Station, Mosharraf Hossain, confirmed the incident, stating that the death occurred due to a tyre explosion while repair work was being conducted.

He added that the victim’s family has been informed and the body will be handed over to relatives once they arrive at the hospital.

Authorities have launched a preliminary inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the accident, including whether proper safety measures were followed during the tyre repair process.

Rising Concerns Over Roadside Repair Safety

The incident has once again highlighted safety concerns related to informal roadside vehicle repair practices in Bangladesh, particularly involving high-pressure truck tyres. Such tyres, when improperly handled or over-inflated, can pose extreme risks, especially during maintenance work without adequate protective equipment.

Transport workers in the region have called for improved safety protocols, training, and enforcement of workplace standards at roadside garages to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
