Trudeau to Discuss Canada’s Sovereignty with King Charles

LONDON, March 3, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Sunday that he would meet with King Charles III to discuss the defence of Canada’s sovereignty, following repeated remarks by former US President Donald Trump suggesting that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States.

Trump’s comments have sparked widespread outrage across Canada, with officials across the political spectrum strongly rejecting any suggestion that Canada should join the United States.

In anticipation of his meeting with the King on Monday, Trudeau expressed his intent to discuss matters of significant importance to both Canada and its people. “I can tell you that nothing is more important to Canadians right now than standing up for our sovereignty and our independence as a nation,” Trudeau stated, while in London attending a summit on Ukraine.

Trump has made Canada’s sovereignty a central point of discussion since his re-election in November. He frequently refers to Canada as the “51st state” and has insulted Trudeau by calling him “governor” instead of “prime minister.” In addition to his rhetoric, Trump recently imposed tariffs on Canada, set to take effect on Tuesday, though he suggested they could be avoided if Canada were part of the United States.

Trudeau, in a warning issued last month, labelled Trump’s comments about absorbing Canada for its natural resources as a “real thing” that must be taken seriously.

In Canada, some have voiced their concerns about King Charles’ silence on the matter, questioning why the monarch has not made a public statement in defence of Canadian sovereignty. However, it remains customary for the British monarch to act only on the advice of the Prime Minister in matters pertaining to Commonwealth nations.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has invited Trump to make an unprecedented second state visit to the UK, which could provide an opportunity for the King to address the issue of Canadian sovereignty during his discussions with the former US leader.

During the London summit on Ukrainian security on Sunday, Trudeau also reaffirmed Canada’s continued strong support for Ukraine, alongside the announcement of new sanctions against Russia in response to its actions in the ongoing conflict.

This renewed focus on Canadian sovereignty comes at a time when both national and international political tensions are high. The issue highlights ongoing debates about the future of Canada-US relations, as well as the broader question of global political influence and security. The public dispute also underscores the unique position of Canada within the Commonwealth, with the role of the British monarchy in Canadian affairs being the subject of periodic debate.
