Trump Announces Deadly US Strike on Alleged Drug-Smuggling Vessel

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the US military had struck another drug trafficking vessel in international waters, resulting in the deaths of three people.

Unlike previous strikes in recent weeks, Trump did not specify whether the attack occurred off the coast of Venezuela, where the US Navy has deployed a small armada to combat drug smuggling. He only noted that the strike took place within the US Southern Command area of responsibility, which encompasses Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean.

Details of the Attack

  • The precise date of the strike was not disclosed.
  • Trump stated on his platform Truth Social that US intelligence had confirmed the boat was carrying narcotics “along a known narcotrafficking passage en route to poison Americans.”
  • The post included video showing a speedboat in the crosshairs of a weapon, subsequently exploding after being struck by ordnance.

Trump commented: “The strike killed 3 male narcoterrorists aboard the vessel, which was in international waters. No US Forces were harmed in this strike.”

Military Deployment

The US has deployed a substantial force to the southern Caribbean, including:

Asset Deployment Location
8 warships Off the coast of Venezuela
1 nuclear-powered submarine Southern Caribbean
10 fighter jets Puerto Rico

This deployment has stirred widespread concern in Latin America, prompting fears of a possible US attack on Venezuela.

Legal and Political Controversies

  • The strike has sparked debate over its legality, as drug trafficking is not a capital offense under US law.
  • Washington has not released independent evidence verifying that the targeted vessels were indeed trafficking narcotics.
  • Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has accused the US of attempting regime change under the pretext of combating drug trafficking.

Previous Strikes

  • Trump has previously stated that three vessels had been destroyed, resulting in 14 deaths, though video evidence has only been released for two attacks.
  • It is unclear whether Friday’s reported strike corresponds to the previously mentioned three vessels or constitutes a new, fourth attack.

Trump’s announcements form part of a broader effort to pressure Maduro, whose re-elections are disputed and whose legitimacy is not recognised by the US and much of the international community.

This campaign has intensified US-Venezuela tensions, raising concerns about the international legality of targeted killings at sea and the potential for escalation in the region.
