Trump calls Iran’s Supreme Leader ‘unwell

Former US President Donald Trump has publicly described Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as a “sick individual” and called for the end of his regime. His remarks come amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, and in response to Khamenei’s comments blaming Trump for deaths in ongoing Iranian protests.

In an interview with Politico on Saturday, 17 January, Trump stated, “It is time for Iran to seek new leadership.” He accused the current ruling elite of maintaining power through “oppression and violence,” asserting that their authority is sustained not through popular support but through fear.

Trump’s statements were made in reaction to multiple social media posts by Khamenei on X (formerly Twitter), in which the Iranian leader referred to Trump as a “criminal” and accused him of fomenting unrest in Iran. Responding to these posts, Trump emphasised that the “crime” of a leader should be judged by their impact on their own nation, not by foreign criticisms.

He argued, “As a national leader, Khamenei has failed his people by steering his country towards destruction and employing unprecedented levels of violence. Effective leadership requires maintaining a nation’s functions—no matter how flawed—while prioritising the well-being of its citizens, rather than ruling through fear and killing thousands to hold onto power.”

Trump continued, “Leadership should embody respect and governance, not a reign of terror and death.”

He was especially critical of Khamenei, describing him in stark terms: “This individual is a sick man. He ought to focus on properly governing his own country and stop the mass killings. Weak leadership has turned Iran into one of the worst places to live on Earth.”

The former president’s remarks highlight the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, particularly in the context of domestic unrest in Iran. His comments also reflect a broader critique of authoritarian governance, contrasting it with his own claims of leadership in the United States.
