President Donald Trump once again floated the idea on Wednesday of bringing Washington, D.C. under direct federal control, including the potential use of military force, based on what he falsely described as rising crime in the capital city.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said:
“We’re considering it, yeah, because the crime is ridiculous. We want to have a great safe capital — and we’re going to have it. The rate of crime, the rate of muggings, killings, and everything else — we’re not going to let it [continue] — and that includes bringing in the National Guard, maybe very quickly too.”
Context: Local vs Federal Governance
| Governance of D.C. | Status |
| District Status | Not a state; governed as a federal district |
| Local Government | Elected Mayor and City Council |
| Federal Oversight | U.S. Congress holds constitutional oversight |
| Duration of Home Rule | Over 50 years |
| Current Delegate (Non-voting) | Eleanor Holmes Norton |
Under a more than 50-year-old agreement, Washington, D.C. is governed by a locally elected government, including a mayor and city council, though Congress maintains constitutional oversight. Despite this, Trump has repeatedly challenged this arrangement, advocating instead for federal control of the capital — a move that would place city affairs, including law enforcement, under the direct authority of the White House.
Recent Statements & Threats
Trump reiterated his stance in a post on his social media platform, stating:
“If D.C. doesn’t get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run.”
These remarks came a day after his online warning and follow previous instances where he has shown a willingness to deploy federal or military forces in Democrat-led cities, often against the objections of local officials.
Crime Statistics Paint a Different Picture
Contrary to Trump’s assertions, police statistics indicate that violent crime in Washington, D.C. dropped by 26% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period the previous year.
| Crime Data Snapshot | Figures |
| Violent Crime (H1 2025 vs 2024) | ↓ 26% |
| Overall 2024 Crime Rate | Lowest in 30 years (Justice Department statistics) |
These statistics, including Justice Department data released before Trump assumed office, highlight that the capital’s 2024 crime rates were the lowest in three decades.
Political and Legal Pushback
Eleanor Holmes Norton, Washington’s non-voting delegate to Congress, strongly rejected both Trump’s claim of surging crime and his threat to federalise the capital, asserting:
“Presidents have no authority to unilaterally take control of D.C. Congress would have to pass a law, and I won’t let the current effort get that far.”
Previous Federal Deployments
Trump’s consideration of a National Guard deployment in Washington comes just weeks after he deployed California’s military reserve force to Los Angeles in response to protests over immigration raids — despite opposition from local authorities and law enforcement agencies.
This fits a broader pattern in which Trump has frequently entertained the idea of using military power to exert control over cities, particularly those run by Democratic administrations, many of which oppose his nationalist and authoritarian-leaning policies.
Trump’s renewed focus on Washington, D.C. raises constitutional, legal, and political questions, with critics warning that such moves threaten democratic norms and the long-standing balance between local and federal authority.
