Washington, D.C. — United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday hailed the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk as a “martyr for truth and freedom” during an emotional White House ceremony, where he posthumously awarded Kirk America’s highest civilian honour — the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The 31-year-old right-wing commentator and founder of Turning Point USA was shot dead last month on a Utah college campus, a killing that has shaken the conservative movement and prompted Trump to intensify his promised crackdown on left-wing extremism.
At the White House East Room, Trump presented the Medal of Freedom to Kirk’s tearful widow, Erika Kirk, before an audience of leading conservative figures, cabinet officials, and international guests.
“Charlie Kirk was a martyr for truth and freedom,” Trump declared solemnly. “Like Socrates, Saint Peter, Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, he gave his life for what he believed in.”
The president, aged 79, described Kirk’s assassination as a “national tragedy” and vowed to pursue “zero tolerance” against what he called radical leftist violence.
“In the wake of Charlie’s assassination, our country must have absolutely no tolerance for this radical left violence, extremism and terror,” Trump said.
“We’re done with the angry mobs, and we will not let our cities be unsafe.”
The event drew several prominent conservative figures, including visiting Argentinian President Javier Milei, a libertarian ally of Trump, alongside senior Republican lawmakers, right-wing media personalities, and faith leaders.
Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, spoke briefly through tears, thanking Trump for returning early from a Middle East peace trip to preside over the award ceremony — which coincided with what would have been her husband’s 32nd birthday.
“You have given him the best birthday gift he could ever have,” she said, pausing at times to collect herself. “Charlie would probably have run for president one day if he had not been taken from us.”
According to law enforcement, Charlie Kirk, a father of two, was fatally shot on a Utah college campus last month.
Tyler Robinson, aged 22, has been charged with Kirk’s murder and faces the death penalty if convicted.
Trump’s response to the killing included deploying National Guard troops to several Democrat-run cities, citing threats of potential unrest.

In a parallel move, the US State Department announced on Tuesday that it had revoked the visas of at least six foreign nationals who had “celebrated the heinous assassination” of Kirk on social media.
Officials cited online posts from users allegedly in Argentina, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil, Paraguay, and Germany, containing remarks that labelled Kirk “racist,” “xenophobic,” or worse.

This follows previous visa cancellations targeting hundreds of individuals allegedly involved in anti-Israel and Gaza war protests on US university campuses — a policy that has drawn sharp criticism from civil liberties groups.
Trump used the ceremony to reaffirm his administration’s law-and-order stance and ideological unity with conservative movements worldwide.
“Charlie represented the spirit of America — courage, conviction, and love for freedom,” Trump said.
“We will continue his fight. We will not allow this kind of political violence to go unanswered.”
He also used the occasion to link the assassination to what he described as “a culture of radical intolerance” in the political left.
Kirk’s supporters have hailed him as a “digital warrior” who used TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube to build a vast youth audience for conservative causes.
Kirk’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief among conservatives and intensified calls for stronger protection of public figures.
In conservative circles, his name has already become a rallying symbol of perceived political persecution.

As the ceremony concluded, a moment of silence was observed before the Marine Band performed “America the Beautiful.”

The posthumous honour marked one of the most emotionally charged moments of Trump’s presidency — blending personal grief, political symbolism, and a resolute message of ideological defiance.
