U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that the trajectory of the Russia-Ukraine conflict will be determined within a matter of weeks. Speaking at a joint press conference alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday, Trump hinted at an imminent diplomatic breakthrough. The high-stakes meeting took place at the President’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, where both leaders discussed the framework of a potential peace treaty intended to halt nearly four years of devastating warfare.
Trump expressed a cautiously optimistic timeline for a resolution, stating, “If things go well, it’s going to happen in a matter of weeks. If things go poorly, it could take a long time.” He further claimed that Washington and Kyiv are currently “very close” to an agreement that could bring an end to the hostilities. To propel the proposed peace plan, Trump even suggested the possibility of addressing the Ukrainian Parliament, noting that if such a gesture could “save 25,000 lives a month,” he would certainly undertake the task.
Despite the optimism regarding a ceasefire, the territorial status of the Donbas remains a significant hurdle. Russia currently occupies nearly the entire region and demands that Kyiv formally cede the territory to Moscow as a prerequisite for peace. While Trump’s current proposal reportedly includes provisions for Russia to retain control of the Donbas, President Zelenskyy remains resistant to such concessions. Both leaders admitted on Sunday that the future of the region remains “unresolved,” though Trump insisted that “95 per cent” of the broader security deal has been finalised.
In a display of rapid-fire diplomacy, Trump revealed he had held a “productive” telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin just moments before the Ukrainian delegation arrived at Mar-a-Lago. Conversely, the Kremlin has remained firm; Yuri Ushakov, a senior foreign policy official, stated that Putin warned Trump that a proposed 60-day truce—suggested by the EU and Ukraine—would only serve to “prolong the war.” Moscow is demanding an immediate decision from Kyiv regarding the Donbas.
| Key Aspect of Negotiations | Status/Detail |
|---|---|
| Peace Deal Timeline | Predicted within “a few weeks” |
| Agreement Progress | Approximately 95% finalised, per Trump |
| Primary Dispute | Future sovereignty of the Donbas region |
| European Involvement | Expected to bear “major responsibility” for enforcement |
| Casualty Reduction | Goal to save estimated 25,000 lives per month |
| Security Guarantees | Ukraine claims an understanding has been reached |
President Trump emphasized that for any peace plan to succeed, European nations must step up and assume a larger responsibility in supporting and enforcing the agreement. As Trump prepares to hold a follow-up call with President Putin, the world watches to see if this diplomatic surge can truly end the largest land war in Europe since 1945.
