WASHINGTON, 8 June 2025 (BSS/AFP) – US President Donald Trump has warned tech mogul Elon Musk of facing “very serious consequences” if the billionaire attempts to penalise Republican lawmakers who back a contentious federal spending bill currently being debated in Congress.

The fallout marks a dramatic rupture in the once-powerful alliance between the president and Musk, one of the Republican Party’s biggest donors in the 2024 presidential election. The public split, played out largely on social media, has stunned political observers and rattled Washington.

The Breakdown in Relations

The dispute was sparked by Musk’s sharp condemnation of the legislation, which he labelled an “abomination”. In response, several conservative lawmakers called on Musk to bankroll primary challenges against Republican members who vote in favour of the bill.

President Trump, speaking to NBC News, branded Musk “disrespectful” and issued a vague but ominous warning:

“He’ll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that.”

He further stated he had “no desire” to reconcile with the South African-born Tesla and SpaceX CEO, and that he had “no intention of speaking to him” again.

This marks a stark contrast to last week, when Trump had publicly praised Musk as he departed from his advisory position at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a cost-cutting initiative within the federal government.

Epstein Allegations Stir Controversy

Musk reignited controversy by alleging on social media platform X that President Trump appears in unreleased government files related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, who died in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

“Time to drop the really big bomb: [Trump] is in the Epstein files,” Musk wrote.

The billionaire did not provide evidence or specify which files he was referring to. He later posted:

“Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out.”

However, by Saturday morning, the tweets had been removed.

President Trump dismissed the allegations as “old news”, stating:

“Even Epstein’s lawyer said I had nothing to do with it.”

Trump was named in a series of unsealed depositions and statements linked to Epstein in early 2024, but has not been formally accused of any wrongdoing. The president has admitted to knowing Epstein socially but denies visiting Little Saint James, Epstein’s private island in the US Virgin Islands.

In a 2002 profile, Trump described Epstein as a:

“Terrific guy… It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.”

Political Fallout and Implications

The breakdown between Trump and Musk represents a significant political rift with financial and strategic implications for the Republican Party. Musk’s potential withdrawal of support — or redirection of campaign funds — could alter the landscape in key primaries.

Meanwhile, conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein’s network continue to circulate in far-right circles, though no official sources have confirmed the president’s inclusion in unreleased material.

As of now, the fate of the controversial spending bill remains uncertain, as does the future of the once-powerful Trump-Musk alliance.
