Alice and Ellen Kessler — the famous German twin entertainers known across Europe as the Kessler Twins — have passed away together at the age of 89, fulfilling their lifelong wish to leave the world on the same day. The celebrated singers and dancers, who shared an inseparable bond both on and off stage, chose to end their lives simultaneously at their home in Grünwald, near Munich.
According to multiple international media reports, the sisters had planned their joint death for some time. On Tuesday, Munich police confirmed in a statement that Alice and Ellen made a deliberate, peaceful decision to die together at their residence.
The twins were members of the German Society for Human Dying, an organisation that supports individuals seeking assisted voluntary death under strict ethical and medical guidelines. Before their passing, they reportedly held consultations with a lawyer and a doctor, ensuring their decision complied with all legal requirements in Germany.
Born in 1936, Alice and Ellen Kessler began dancing as children and received professional training from a young age. After their family fled from East Germany to West Germany in the 1950s, the twins launched their showbusiness careers, becoming household names across Europe. They performed on television, in musicals, and in international cabaret shows, admired for their synchronised dancing, elegance, and charm.
In an interview with an Italian newspaper last year, the sisters had spoken openly about their wish to “depart the world together, just as we entered it together”.
Their passing has evoked both sadness and admiration among fans and artists who grew up watching them perform. Many have described the Kessler Twins as icons of grace, loyalty, and lifelong companionship.
A gentle reminder:
If you ever feel that life has become unbearable, please know that you are not alone. Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness but of strength. Speak to a mental-health professional, counsellor, trusted friend, or family member. What feels permanent now may pass with time, care, and conversation. Life remains precious, and hope and beauty still await ahead.
