“Two brothers are against each other; whom will their mother support?”

Cricket runs deep in the Morne family of South Africa. Their father, Albert Mornekel, was a respected pace bowler who played domestic cricket in South Africa. Following in his footsteps, all three of his sons—Albie Mornekel, Malan Mornekel, and Morne Mornekel—have carved out their own cricketing journeys.

Albie, the eldest, was hailed as a potential all-rounder of significant promise. Though he did not fully reach those lofty heights, his achievements remain the envy of many aspiring cricketers. The middle son, Malan, was known for his fiery fast bowling and represented South Africa at the Under-19 level. The youngest, Morne, has emerged as one of South Africa’s pace legends.

For cricket fans, the Mornekel family may already be familiar, but it is worth revisiting their story—especially in the context of an emotionally charged moment for their mother, Mariana Mornekel.

A Childhood of Rivalries

As children, the three brothers would play tennis-ball cricket in the small field beside their home, inevitably leading to squabbles. One can only imagine whose side their mother took during those playful disputes. Now, decades later, a far bigger confrontation looms: tomorrow in Ahmedabad, the T20 World Cup Super Eight clash between India and South Africa.

In this fixture, Morne Mornekel serves as India’s bowling coach, while Albie Mornekel acts as a specialist consultant for South Africa. For Mariana, this presents a unique dilemma: whom to support—India’s blue or South Africa’s green? Her answer is simple yet heartfelt: she supports both sons.

“You cannot cheer for both teams on the field,” explains Albie with a smile, recalling a press conference. “Our mother is probably more anxious than either of us. She doesn’t know who to support—India or South Africa.”

Cricketing Careers Side by Side

Albie, 44, was a regular in South Africa’s white-ball setup, playing 58 ODIs, 50 T20Is, and a solitary Test. Known for his big hitting, he was once considered the heir to Lance Klusener. Morne, standing 1.96 metres tall, was the archetypal fast bowler, taking 309 wickets in 86 Tests, alongside 117 ODIs and 44 T20Is.

The brothers have previously worked together in coaching setups. In the 2022 T20 World Cup, Albie was Namibia’s assistant coach, mentoring Morne among the bowlers. Their paths diverged in the years that followed. Morne went on to coach Pakistan’s bowlers before taking up the role of India’s bowling coach in 2024, while Albie worked with Chennai Super Kings and Johannesburg Super Kings under the mentorship of New Zealand legend Stephen Fleming.

Brother Role in T20 World Cup Previous Experience Matches Played
Albie Mornekel Specialist Consultant, South Africa Assistant coach, IPL & SA domestic teams 58 ODIs, 50 T20Is, 1 Test
Morne Mornekel Bowling Coach, India Bowling coach, Pakistan & India, T20 WC 2022 44 T20Is, 117 ODIs, 86 Tests

Despite their close family ties, communication between the brothers during the tournament has been minimal. Morne notes, “We’ve seen each other, but there hasn’t been much discussion. It’s good to see him, though.”

The Mornekel brothers’ story is unusual in international cricket. While sibling rivalries exist—Chapell, Waugh, Amarnath, and Hadlee families come to mind—they mostly shared the dressing room. The Mornekels, by contrast, now face each other from opposite sides of the coaching dugout, bringing a new dimension to family, loyalty, and cricketing passion.
