Two brothers contest in the same constituency — elder with BNP, younger with Jamaat

A rare political scenario has emerged in the Kurigram-4 constituency ahead of the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election. Two brothers from the same family are contesting from two different political parties, creating a stir in the local political arena.

Alhaj Azizur Rahman has officially received the nomination from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and is contesting with the “Sheaf of Paddy” symbol. Meanwhile, his younger brother, Mostafizur Rahman Mostak, is running as a candidate of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami with the “Scale” symbol.

The rivalry between the two brothers has become the main topic of discussion in local politics. Many believe that this family division has introduced a new electoral equation in the constituency, which has traditionally been a stronghold for BNP and Jamaat. Locals think that such a situation may influence voter behavior and cause a split in the pro-BNP–Jamaat vote base.

BNP candidate Azizur Rahman said, “I contested in the 2018 election, and at that time my brother Mostak worked for me. Now he is the Jamaat candidate. However, all my cousins and party workers are supporting me. With my experience as a chairman, Jamaat will not gain any advantage by nominating my brother. Inshallah, I will win.”

On the other hand, Jamaat candidate Mostafizur Rahman Mostak said, “My brother being a BNP candidate will not affect the election. Some of my cousins will remain neutral, while those who take sides will likely support me. I have been preparing for this election for a long time and have organized my campaign well. I am confident of victory.”
