Two cocktail explosions occurred on the road outside the Teachers’ Student Centre (TSC) at Dhaka University on Wednesday night. A pedestrian was injured, and a motorbike parked nearby was damaged in the blasts.
The injured, Jahangir Alam Chakladar, 48, sought treatment at the emergency department of Dhaka Medical Hospital around 9:45 pm. He told reporters that he was on his way to Azimpur from the TSC area when someone threw the cocktails, causing fragments to strike his back.
Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the Dhaka Medical College police outpost, said the victim was receiving treatment and had sustained only minor injuries.
The motorbike owner, Nazmus Sakib, stated that he had been sitting on the pavement drinking tea when one of the cocktails landed on his bike, damaging the fuel tank.
Eyewitnesses suggested that the explosives might have been thrown from the Sohrawardi Udyan area, possibly targeting a documentary screening at the TSC.
Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, the university’s proctor, said authorities believed the cocktails had been thrown from inside Sohrawardi Udyan. The proctorial team and police were dispatched to the scene, and CCTV footage is being reviewed. No suspects have yet been identified.
Shahbagh police officer-in-charge Khalid Monsur added that the incident took place near the gate of the Bangla Academy. Preliminary investigations suggest that the perpetrators may have fled the scene on a motorbike after throwing the explosives.
