A head-on collision between a Bangladesh Army three-ton truck and a passenger bus in Mymensingh has resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to at least fifteen others. The accident occurred on Wednesday at around 10:45 am near Balia Mor, in front of Kakli Rice Mill, on the Sherpur–Mymensingh highway.
The deceased have been identified as:
Sergeant Rezaul Karim, driver of the army truck
Abdul Baset (50), driver of the passenger bus
According to Officer-in-Charge of Fulpur Police Station, Rashedul Hasan, the army truck was returning to Mymensingh after completing camp operations in Fulpur. On its route, it collided head-on with a Sherpur-bound bus. The impact crushed the front sections of both vehicles, causing serious injuries to numerous passengers.
Of the fifteen injured, nine were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, while six others were taken to Mymensingh Combined Military Hospital. Tragically, both drivers succumbed to their injuries while being transported to the medical facilities.
Additional Police Superintendent (Finance & Administration), Md. Abdullah Al Mamun, confirmed that the accident caused severe disruption on the Mymensingh–Haluaghat road. A joint operation by the army, police, and fire service quickly cleared the wreckage, restoring traffic flow. Legal proceedings regarding the collision are currently underway.
A breakdown of casualties is as follows:
| Category | Number | Hospital / Status |
|---|---|---|
| Fatalities | 2 | Deceased en route to hospital |
| Injured | 15 | Mymensingh Medical College: 9, Combined Military Hospital: 6 |
| Total affected | 17 | – |
Authorities are investigating possible causes, including over-speeding, driver error, or road conditions. Balia Mor is a particularly busy junction, and the road’s narrowness likely exacerbated the severity of the collision.
Local residents reported that the accident created a significant traffic jam for several hours. Swift rescue operations by the army, police, and fire service were critical in mitigating further risks and ensuring that emergency services could attend to the injured promptly.
This incident has reignited concerns about road safety on major highways in Mymensingh and Sherpur, particularly for large vehicles such as military trucks and long-distance buses. Officials have indicated plans to strengthen traffic management, improve road signage, and implement stricter vehicle safety checks to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The accident underscores the ongoing need for public awareness of traffic regulations, cautious driving, and infrastructural improvements to reduce risks at high-traffic intersections.
