In a targeted operation ahead of the forthcoming national parliamentary elections, the Bangladesh Army apprehended two individuals in Rupganj Upazila, Narayanganj, in possession of firearms and ammunition. The operation was conducted in the Bhulta and Golakandail areas, known for recent reports of criminal activity.
According to sources at the Purbaachal Army Camp, the operation was based on intelligence reports. It commenced on the night of Saturday, 1 February, at 10:00 PM and continued until 4:00 AM on Sunday, 2 February. Both suspects were apprehended on the spot, with a substantial cache of weapons and ammunition recovered during the raid.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the principal suspect, Md. Kawser, has multiple pending cases at Rupganj Police Station, including charges related to firearms and robbery. Following initial questioning, both detainees were handed over to Rupganj Police for further investigation.
Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Md. Sabzel Hossain, stated, “We have received the detainees from the army. Cases concerning the recovered weapons and ammunition are now under regular legal proceedings. All necessary measures are being taken to prevent untoward incidents during the election period.”
The Bangladesh Army emphasised that the operation was aimed at maintaining law and order and ensuring security in the election-prone area. Local residents of Bhulta and Golakandail reported increasing concerns over illegal arms and criminal activities in recent weeks. Officials noted that operations of this nature play a critical role in safeguarding public safety and maintaining peace.
Security experts also highlighted that such proactive interventions by law enforcement and the army contribute significantly to creating a safe and orderly environment ahead of national elections, ensuring that the democratic process is not disrupted by criminal elements.
