Two farmers have tragically lost their lives after being electrocuted in Nakla upazila of Sherpur district, highlighting once again the persistent dangers associated with rural electrical infrastructure and irrigation systems.

The fatal incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday (17 February) in Puladeshi village under Baneshwardi Union. The matter was confirmed by Dr Maliha Nujat, the duty physician at Nakla Upazila Health Complex.

According to Dr Nujat, three men were brought to the hospital shortly after the incident. “Mintoo and Angur were declared dead upon arrival,” she stated. “Another individual, Samidul Islam, was admitted in a critical condition and subsequently referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.”

The deceased have been identified as Mintoo Mia (45), son of Umed Ali of Puladeshi village, and Angur Mia (50), the eldest son of Kubed Ali, also of the same village. Both men were known locally as small-scale farmers who relied on irrigation to cultivate seasonal crops.

Sequence of Events

Eyewitness Rezaul Karim Mintoo, a retired army sergeant and neighbour, described the circumstances leading to the tragedy. He explained that farmer Samidul Islam was attempting to repair electrical wiring connected to his privately owned irrigation pump. While standing on a ladder, Samidul reportedly came into direct contact with a live wire and was electrocuted, falling to the ground.

Upon witnessing the incident, neighbours Mintoo Mia and Angur Mia rushed to assist him. In their attempt to rescue Samidul, they too came into contact with the electrified equipment and suffered fatal shocks.

All three were immediately transported to Nakla Upazila Health Complex, but doctors were unable to save Mintoo and Angur.

Police Action

Tarikul Islam, duty officer at Nakla Police Station, confirmed that an inquest report has been prepared in connection with the incident. Officer-in-Charge Ripon Chandra Gop stated that preparations are underway to file an unnatural death (UD) case at the police station.

Local residents expressed shock and grief over the sudden loss of two members of the farming community. The incident has also raised concerns regarding the safety standards of irrigation pumps and exposed electrical wiring in rural areas. Agricultural workers frequently handle electrical equipment without adequate protective measures or professional technical assistance, increasing the risk of fatal accidents.

Authorities are expected to investigate the precise cause of the electrocution and determine whether negligence or faulty electrical connections played a role in the tragedy.
