A tragic accident in Sunamganj claimed the lives of two young friends while another sustained injuries as they lost control of their motorcycle during an Eid outing. The incident occurred around midday on Sunday along the Sunamganj-Dhirai road in Gagli, part of Shantiganj Upazila.
The deceased have been identified as Safikul Islam (28), son of the late Ukil Ali from Muktakhai village in Shimulbak Union, and his friend Saidul Islam. The injured companion, Gulzar Ahmed, was hospitalised and remains in recovery.
According to local police and eyewitnesses, the trio had departed from Safikul’s village on a motorcycle, heading to the Shimul Bagan tourist area in Tahirpur to enjoy the Eid festivities. While travelling along the Sunamganj-Dhirai road near Gagli, the motorcycle veered off course and collided with a tree.
The impact was severe: the front section of the motorcycle was completely destroyed, and Safikul sustained catastrophic injuries, with broken bones embedding him against the tree. Local residents immediately came to their aid and transported the victims to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital. On arrival, the attending medical team declared Safikul Islam dead.
Due to the severity of his injuries, Saidul Islam was transferred to M.A.G. Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet for advanced treatment. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries en route. Gulzar Ahmed, the third passenger, was admitted to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital and is currently receiving treatment.
Dr. Amjad Hossain, on duty at the hospital’s emergency department, confirmed:
“Of the three victims brought in from the accident, one died before reaching the hospital. Another was transferred to Sylhet due to critical injuries but passed away on the way. The third remains under treatment at our facility.”
Oli Ullah, Officer-in-Charge of Shantiganj Police Station, stated that the police inspected the site immediately after receiving reports. He confirmed that two individuals had died and one was injured, and noted that no complaints or third-party claims were filed regarding the accident.
This tragedy highlights the dangers associated with motorcycle travel during peak holiday periods in Bangladesh. Road conditions, vehicle speed, and loss of control are recurring factors in fatal accidents, especially on rural roads leading to popular tourist sites. Authorities continue to urge motorists and holiday-goers to exercise caution, wear protective gear, and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
