Two individuals, including a van driver, tragically lost their lives in a road accident in Tangail’s Kalihati area on Sunday, 15 February. The collision occurred around midday at the Jokerchar section of the Dhaka–Jamuna Bridge highway, involving a private car and a passenger-carrying van.
The deceased have been identified as Amir Ali, 40, son of Amjad Hossain of Gohaliyabari village, who was driving the van, and Sharif, 41, son of Abdul Mannan, also from Gohaliyabari village, who was travelling as a passenger.
According to local police and eyewitnesses, the private car was travelling from Dhaka towards northern Bangladesh when it struck the van with considerable force while attempting to cross the road at Jokerchar. The impact caused both the driver and the passenger to be thrown onto the road, leaving them critically injured.
Emergency responders and local residents rushed the injured to Tangail General Hospital. Upon arrival, doctors pronounced Sharif dead. Amir Ali, initially treated at Tangail, succumbed to his injuries while being transported to Dhaka for advanced medical care.
Yamuna Setu East Police Station’s Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Shariful Islam confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities have emphasised the need for caution on the busy Dhaka–Jamuna Bridge highway, which witnesses frequent traffic accidents due to high vehicle density and road crossing hazards.
