Two Killed in Truck-Motorcycle Collision

A tragic road accident occurred on Wednesday, 14 January, in Ashuganj Upazila of Brahmanbaria, claiming the lives of two young men. The victims, both riding a motorcycle, collided head-on with a truck on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway, near the Sonarampur Bridge in the Sadar Union, at approximately 6:00 PM.

The deceased have been identified as:

Name Age Father’s Name Village Upazila District
Samaun 20 Shahidul Islam Laxmipur Bhairab Kishoreganj
Abdur Rahman 23 Makrul Molla Laxmipur Bhairab Kishoreganj

Eyewitnesses reported that the two youths were travelling towards Bhairab on their motorcycle when a high-speed truck approached from the opposite direction. The ensuing head-on collision caused the motorcycle to crumple completely, leaving both riders critically injured. Locals quickly transported them to Ashuganj Upazila Health Complex, but doctors declared both men dead upon arrival.

OC of Ashuganj Police Station, Md. Safiul Alam Chowdhury, confirmed that the police were immediately dispatched to the accident site and the health complex. However, before authorities could reach the hospital, relatives of the deceased had already taken the bodies to Bhairab. The incident has been officially reported to the Highway Police for further action.

Officer-in-Charge of Hatikhata Highway Police, Jahangir Alam, stated: “We have received the report. The matter is under investigation, and appropriate legal measures will be taken against those responsible. A detailed inquiry into the accident is ongoing.”

The collision briefly disrupted traffic in the area, but police later restored normal flow. Locals have raised concerns over the high speed of heavy vehicles on the bridge and urged authorities to implement more stringent safety measures, including speed limit enforcement, proper signage, and road safety awareness campaigns.

Road safety experts have emphasised that head-on collisions between motorcycles and large trucks are particularly deadly and that the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway continues to be a high-risk zone due to dense traffic and insufficient preventive measures. The tragic loss of two young lives underscores the urgent need for stricter traffic control, better road infrastructure, and heightened public awareness to prevent similar accidents in the future.
